Classic chocolate cake mix. It couldn't be easier to get rich chocolate cake or cupcakes!

This mix is quite good for cakes and cupcakes. I tend to doctor it up a bit, so you can hardly tell that I've used a mix.

my yr. old makes this on his own and we all love it! pretty good cake in a box. it may taste bland on it's own but we add frosting and it's just right!

I used this cake mix to make cupcakes which came out blandly-- I did not dislike them nor not recommend this mix, but I would have liked a richer chocolate flavor.

The best cake in a box I have had in a long time. Very very good

I made this recently for a friend's birthday and topped it with homemade fudge buttercream. I was blown away by this cake...It was so moist, just the right amount of chocolate, and did not have an artificial or chemical taste that a lot of cake mixes seem to have. I would recommend this to anyone who likes chocolate cake, you will not be disappointed!

I've always been a purist and made cakes from scratch. I'm very suspicious of cake mixes, but surely Trader Joe's would be different. The conclusions: Trader Joe's Chocolate Cake Mix really shouldn't be called a mix. It's heaven in a box. It mixes up very easily without even the use of a stand or hand-mixer. I just use a whisk. It bakes relatively quickly and smells amazing in the meantime. I honestly cannot tell the difference between the cake this mix produces and something I would have spent much longer on, measuring shortening or butter or melting chocolate. The cake is rich, moist, and can hold up to whatever frosting you like. I've used rich chocolate buttercream frostings and fruity cooked frostings and they all compliment this cake. It really is the be-all and end-all of chocolate cakes. You can't tell that it came from a box. It is now a staple in my cupboard. My family is still in awe that all it takes is a casual, "I wish we had cake" and within an hour, we do!

The packaging of this cake mix immediately caught my eye - I love the retro look. The cake itself is dark, rich, and moist. The batter mixes up smooth and silky and bakes up with an intoxicating aroma. While I was baking cupcakes, I stepped into my front yard for just a moment and a neighbor stopped to ask me what I was making, saying it smelled heavenly. The mix is high in sugar, FYI.
